A request to “add AI” leaves the most important question unanswered: what should become easier for the person doing the work?
Consider a service business receiving inquiries through a website. A useful outcome might be getting complete, relevant information to the right person. A chatbot is one possible interface. A better form, a routing rule, or a clearer service page might solve the problem with less machinery.
That is not an argument against AI. It is an argument for giving it a specific job.
Separate the kinds of work
Some work is predictable: checking required fields, looking up a record, applying an agreed rule. Other work involves interpreting messy language: summarizing a request, suggesting a category, or drafting a response. Those are different problems, and they do not need the same solution.
Anthropic's architecture essay distinguishes predetermined workflows from agents that choose their own steps. That distinction is useful even outside its product ecosystem. More freedom is a design choice, not automatically an improvement. Source: Anthropic
For the inquiry example, an initial design could let AI suggest a summary while ordinary application logic handles routing. A person still decides whether to make a commitment to the prospective customer.
Define the boundary before the demo
A credible proposal should explain what the system can read, what it can change, and where it stops. It should also describe what happens when information is incomplete. “Ask for clarification” is often a better outcome than confidently completing the wrong task.
The first delivery does not need to transform the entire business. It needs to improve one bounded piece of work and produce evidence that the improvement is real. Compare the effort required before and after, including review and correction. Keep the version without AI in the comparison.
The useful question is not whether a company has adopted AI. It is whether the work is clearer, the result is dependable enough for its purpose, and someone can maintain the system after the demonstration ends.
